Martin, who ran a nursery near Lunada Bay in the 1920s and helped plant more than 600,000 trees across the Peninsula — a park near Malaga Cove still carries his name. Palos Verdes Drive West, the road cut through Bluff Cove in 1923, was built unusually wide for a planned electric railway that was never actually built, which is part of why the drive still feels so open today. Just offshore, the wreck of the S.S. Dominator, a Greek freighter that ran aground near the bay's north point in 1961, remains a well-known landmark for anyone who's spent time on this coastline.

Lunada Bay itself is a rocky cove with tide pools, a steep trail down from Paseo del Mar, and sweeping views out to Catalina on a clear day. It's known among surfers for a strong, well-regarded wave, and the small commercial hub at Lunada Bay Plaza gives the neighborhood a modest, low-key center without pulling focus from the coastline itself.
